This wasn't my first attempt at making a web site, nor was it the first one that I completed. It was, however the first one that I actually posted to a web host.
Probably like most web sites out there, this one has only a vague likeness to it's prototype. It was originally intended to be a fames page, however, the hosting service, FreeHost, placed ad banners on both the upper index, an 8% row at the top, and the body fame. This, unfortunately, made the upper index portion almost unviewable without scrolling and the body page inconveniently placed near the bottom of the screen.
Oh well, I guess I can live without frames...at least it's a free service. I'm currently making a frames site for my ear doctor which, since it will be a paid host, won't have these limitations. As soon as I have it posted I'll link to it from a couple of places on this site.
For those who are interested and don't know HTML code, the code I used to divide my frames was the simplest possible frames code:
As I said earlier, this wasn't the first web site I made. The first one was a couple of years ago for my church. I didn't exactly have a world of time on my hands and before I got half way done with it they were contacted by someone who made sites for other churches. I finished the site anyway, just to get it done.
That page was completely done in standard HTML code. This one also uses JavaScript and HTML forms. Some of the coding I used here wasn't available at the time I did the church web page.
This Site in Particular
This site, as it exists today, came about in stages. I built it basically because I just got the bug one day to build my own personal web page. Up until then I really hadn't considered what I would put on a web site if I had one. That, by itself, made designing the site all the harder for me. What to put up???
Well, this site is divided into a home page and four different categories or sections. Each of the sections, except one, has pages under it. The one that doesn't is just a page that lists organized links to some of my favorite places to visit on the web.
The categories that my site is divided into are the 'About Me' page and section, the 'Professional' section, the 'Family' section, and of course the '...My favorite web sites' section.
That being said, lets take a closer look.
The Home Page
This is my 'Hi, how're you doing', introduction page.7nbsp; The Frost poem appiies to me and the rest of the page is just a brief 'Come on in and take a look'.
About Me
Oh, this is just what it seems to be. A one page bio. Back in the days when I was single and hung out on the singles sites on the internet I would get asked certain questions almost universally. This addresses most of those questions (and just a bit extra).
Under the 'About Me' section I have two other pages. The first of these is a small collection of some of the articles I've written and had published. Most of the articles I've written were for a university newspaper but I've also been published in other periodicals. There's also an article from my bicycle club newsletter and one that was written about me the first time that I did the annual John Hancock building stair climb. That one ran in a Suburban Chicago newspaper.
The other page in this section is an account of my experience with laser eye surgery. I felt a real need to include this because I'm convinced that I had the best possible doctor and the best possible procedure.
Professional
I felt the need to include a section addressing my professional life primarily because I recently completed a new degree and am making a career change. I included, and am preparing, the things that I believe that are useful to that end. I'm posting my resume and associated references and a link to an independent, on-line portfolio. Aside from that I also posted some pictures and descriptions of a couple of the devices that I designed.
I wanted to include some of the programs I've written but I decided that I would save those to present to perspective employers.
